Labor Day marks the unofficial beginning to Fall in St. Louis and that means there are many fun and exciting activities happening at the Core of Discovery! From free concerts series and stargazing programs on a cool autumn evening underneath the Gateway Arch to an assortment of riverboat cruises, there’s something for everyone!

Experience St. Louis prior to the Civil War when slave owners and anti-slavery sympathizers lived side by side in a city that housed both slaves and free blacks. This special exhibit at The Eugene Field House and St. Louis Toy Museum features replica hands-on pieces and a one of-a-kind dollhouse from 1837.

Founded on the banks of the Mississippi River, Saint Louis has thrived as a city built by riverboats, steam engines, and trains. Watching boats traveling up and down the Mississippi is a common pastime of a Saint Louis native and wanting to ride in one a dream of many a little boy. Being the Gateway to the West, gave Saint Louis prime opportunity for advancement in transportation. With the first steam engine that arrived in 1827; St. Louis industrialized, these new boats along with trains brought people, merchandise and raw goods to a booming 19th century metropolis.
Beginning August 10, 2011, The Eugene Field House will be sharing its collection of transportation toys with visitors. On display will be not only boats and trains, but also early models of cars and planes. Each a reproduction of what was instrumental in the building of the Gateway City.

Explore the Arch grounds at night by participating in a ranger-led twilight walk that explores the various “incarnations” of buildings, people, and boats that once inhabited the area where the Gateway Arch stands today. Participants should meet at the north leg of the Gateway Arch. For more information call 877-982-1410.

“Ghosts of the Arch Grounds Walking Tour: This 30 to 45 minute ranger-led twilight walk will discuss the various “incarnations” of the Arch grounds throughout history. This program will be followed by telescope viewing with volunteers from the St. Louis Astronomical Society, weather permitting.

Experience America’s favorite pastime as it was played in the 19th century as local teams play vintage baseball games under the Gateway Arch. In addition to the games, the event will feature vintage uniforms and equipment, logo tracing/coloring plates of past and present St. Louis Cardinals team logos, a historic narrative film of Negro League Baseball, They Were All Stars, and discussion on the vocabulary of 19th century baseball, compared to today’s terms. October 28, 2011 marks the 46th anniversary of the final section of the Gateway Arch being put into place. Meet builders and workers who were on the Arch construction project and will share their incredible first-hand stories of their role in building a structure that had never been built before and nothing like it has been built since. At the celebration event they will share their memorabilia and photographs—some of which have never been seen before by the public. Click here for more information!

Admire a series of paintings at the Old Courthouse and the Gateway Arch as this national touring exhibit combines America’s stunning history and landscape with the talent of nationally recognized American artists. At the Old Courthouse, visitors will see this year’s 100 best depictions of some of the almost 400 natural and historic areas preserved by the National Park Service. For the first time, the Gateway Arch will also exhibit a portion of the art work with the “Paint the Parks Mini 50”, a series of paintings 180 square inches or less, on display in the Special Exhibit Gallery at the back of the Museum of Westward Expansion. All paintings are available for purchase and proceeds will benefit the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial’s educational
programs.
